| When the king could not threaten him, he offered Gautama lordship of a province from his kingdom and some gold in return of the horse. Surya rushed to meet his friend and said – wow, how good it is to receive an offer of a province and gold. Gautama had nothing new to say – please do not say it is good to have such an offer, as I do not know what is good and what is bad. One day Gautama’s son took the horse to jungle. But as the horse was untrained, he fell down on the ground, got hit severely and got his leg broken. Surya was back as always with his opinion – how bad it is to have a broken leg of your son. Gautama replied in full calmness – just as I do not know what is good, I also do not know what is bad, so please do not say it is good or bad.
The very next day a neighboring king attacked the state where Gautama lived. The king sent his army to collect all the young men from every village and send them to the battle field. King’s army came to Gautama’s village and dragged out every young man from his house, even if they were not willing, they were sent to fight the war. They came to Gautama’s house, and found his son. But this young man had a broken leg, so the army did not take him to the warfront. Eventually most young men from the village died on the battlefield. Even Surya had lost his son. He was back with his usual reaction, telling Gautama – how good it is that his son’s leg was broken, his life was saved. Now Gautama could not resist saying – how many times even before I have told you, I do not know what is good and what is bad, there is no way we could label something as good or bad. Every time something happens, you come to me and say it is good or bad. Haven’t you learned from so many times, that what you say good, eventually turns into your bad, and what you say bad, eventually turns into good, and the circle goes on and on. So I cannot say if something is good or bad because I do not know, I cannot see the bigger scheme of events. |
